Fue el fundador de los Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas, Instituto religioso católico de carácter laical dedicado a la educación de niños y jóvenes, especialmente de los más pobres. Su padre le había preparado una carrera jurídica, pero Jean tenía vocación religiosa. El 7 de enero de 1667 se convirtió en canónigo en Reims, estudia teología en París a partir de 1670 y fue ordenado cura el 9 de abril de 1678. Finalmente, en 1680, recibió el título de doctor en teología. Sin embargo, en 1679 había fundado una escuela gratuita para los pobres y en 1681 aloja en su casa a varios enseñantes pobres.
